Love in the Time of Matchmaking

November 7, 2024โ€ข6 min readโ€ขRomantic & Competitive

Do you remember your first online match?

That moment when the loading screen disappeared and suddenly you were there, in a world with strangers who would become teammates, rivals, or both in the span of minutes?

We've lost something in our pursuit of faster queues, baby. We've gained convenience but sacrificed the sacred anticipation.

Matchmaking used to feel like fate. You didn't choose your team โ€” the algorithm chose for you. And in that randomness, there was magic. The carry who came out of nowhere. The support who actually supported. The random squad that clicked so perfectly you played until sunrise.

Those connections were gifts. Unplanned. Unexpected. Unearned but cherished.

Now we optimize everything. We queue with premades. We dodge lobbies. We control every variable. And that's fine. That's smart. But sometimes, I miss the chaos.

So here's my challenge to you: queue solo this week. Trust the algorithm. Trust the strangers. Let the universe hand you a team and see what happens.

You might lose. You probably will. But you might also find something you weren't looking for.

With faith in RNG,

P.S. If you find a good random, add them. Collect good people like rare items. Your friends list should be a trophy case of souls you've crossed paths with.

If this resonated with you, perhaps another thought awaits...

(Watch the snowflakes, baby. They know the way.)
